HR is hard at work at Duplin General

Susan Hayes thoroughly enjoys her job. As the vice president of human resources with Kenansville, N.C.-based Duplin General Hospital for the past two years, Hayes has taken on quite a bit of work. "It is always hard to describe my job," she says. In a nutshell, she takes care of all policies and procedures as well as the administrative benefits at the 101-bed facility.

Duplin General provides healthcare services for the 44,000 citizens of Duplin County. Opened in 1955, the hospital offers medical/surgical care, intensive care, maternal and child health, psychiatric and skilled-nursing-level care. For emergencies, specially trained physicians are on duty 24 hours a day.

Duplin General is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is a member of The American Hospital Association, Coastal Carolina Health Alliance, Eastern Carolina Health Network, North Carolina Hospital Association and Premier. It is also affiliated with University Health Systems.

Hayes notes that the hospital utilizes job fairs and print advertisements to attract and retain employees. The majority of those who apply for jobs with Duplin General are either recent graduates or people who have relocated to the area. As far as the job opportunities, the only real need at Duplin is for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. "There is a drastic shortage, not only here but nationally," she says. "The biggest demand is in critical care." Although it depends on the position, it usually takes a bit longer to fill nursing positions than any other. "It can take as long as six months," she adds.

Other than employment, there are many advantages to living in North Carolina. "Besides the fact that it is beautiful here," Hayes says, "there is so much diversity - we're an hour from Raleigh and Fayetteville, the beach is nearby, we are only three hours from the mountains." For those wanting to relocate to a quiet, small-town area that is in close proximity to a thriving metropolis, this is the perfect place to be.
